Universal Mandala

This Thangka is a type of Universal Mandala (Tibetan: dkyil 'khor), a sacred geometric diagram used as a visual aid for meditation and spiritual transformation. The term mandala means "that which encircles a center," signifying unity and divine order.

The composition features a large central mandala surrounded by four smaller mandalas at the corners. This arrangement often represents the central universal Buddha Mahāvairocana in the main circle, with the Four Tathagatas (Buddhas of the four directions) in the surrounding circles, representing the five wisdoms or Buddha families.

The entire structure—which can represent the deity's sacred palace or the entire universe—guides the practitioner inward, symbolizing the journey from the chaotic outer world to the ultimate state of enlightenment (the center).
