Wheel of Life

This Thangka depicts the Wheel of Life (Sanskrit: Bhavacakra), a visual summary of the core Buddhist teachings on Samsara—the cyclical existence of suffering, death, and rebirth.

The entire wheel is held or embraced by the terrifying figure of Yama, the Lord of Death, symbolizing that all beings within the cycle are subject to impermanence and mortality.

The rim is divided into 12 sections illustrating the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination (pratītyasamutpāda), showing how ignorance leads to the cycle. The main spokes divide the interior into Six Realms of existence (gods, demigods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings), while the central hub shows the Three Poisons (pig, snake, and rooster) driving the cycle.
