Wheel of Life

This Thangka is a vibrant depiction of the Wheel of Life (Sanskrit: Bhavacakra), a foundational image in Buddhism that summarizes the core teachings of Samsara.

The entire cosmic wheel is held in the jaws and claws of the terrifying figure of Yama, the Lord of Death, signifying that all beings within the cyclical world are subject to impermanence.

The main body of the wheel is divided into the Six Realms of Existence (gods, demigods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings). The central hub contains the Three Poisons (a pig for ignorance, a snake for hatred, and a rooster for desire) that perpetually drive the cycle.
