This Thangka is a dark, richly detailed depiction of the Wheel of Life (Sanskrit: Bhavacakra), the central Buddhist diagram summarizing the doctrine of Samsara.

The entire cosmic wheel, representing the cycle of suffering and rebirth, is tightly gripped by the monster Yama, the Lord of Death, symbolizing that all beings within the cycle are subject to impermanence. The interior is divided into the Six Realms of Existence (gods, demigods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings).

The central hub contains the Three Poisons (pig, snake, and rooster) driving the cycle, while the outer rim illustrates the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, which explain the root of the suffering.
